President Benigno Aquino III has approved a P44-billion multi-year defense contract for the Department of National Defense in the immediate purchase of seven more military modernization project beginning this year. A senior defense official said on Saturday.
Defense official added that this military equipment will help boost maritime security capability as tensions simmer in the South China Sea.
Defense Undersecretary Fernando Manalo made the announcement after the government received the first two of a dozen new South Korean-made light fighter jets to enhance the country’s air defense capabilities.
The seven priority military projects include the acquisitions for the Philippine Navy and Philippine Air Force.
Two Philippine Navy frigates.
Navy Amphibious Assault Vehicles.
Three Navy’s Anti-Submarine Helicopters.
Philippine Air Force long range patrol and surveillance aircraft.
Philippine Air Force six close air support aircraft.
Weapons, munitions for FA-50PH fighter jet.
Three aerial surveillance radar.
At the welcoming ceremony of two new South Korean-made FA-50PH fighters jets at Clark Air Force Base in Pampanga, Manalo told journalists that, “In-approve na ni President iyong authority ni SND (Secretary of National Defense) to enter into a multi-year contract for seven projects.”
Manalo said President Aquino signed the proposals on Friday, November 27 and the payment for the seven projects will start from 2015 to 2017 or 2018. – Carl E.
