BEIJING, China – An enormous military parade moves through Tienanmen Square on Thursday as Beijing honors the 70th commemoration of Japan’s WWII rout, yet real Western delegates are avoiding the show of force.

President Xi  Jinping riding in a Chinese-made Red Flag limousine, standing up through a sunroof with four microphones mounted in front of him, drove past the assembled troops calling out “Greetings, Comrades” every few moments, before the troops started their marching.

Xi commenced the proceedings with a speech at the Tienanmen gate, flanked by Chinese leaders and foreign dignitaries, including Russian leader Vladimir Putin, South Korean President Park Geun-hye and U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.

The parade featured PLA’s 12,000 Chinese soldiers, 500 pieces of hardware and almost 200 aircraft, which comes as Beijing takes a more assertive diplomatic stance.

Leaders from Western countries and some of its allied nation are not present, such as US President Barack Obama, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, and the Republic of the Philippines President Benigno Aquino III, who has drawn Beijing’s ire for beefing up his country’s security policies.
