An economic sanctions against Chinese companies and single entities who the US government believes benefited from Chinese government’s cyber-theft of valuable US trade secrets is currently developing by the Obama administration.
An administration official as quoted by the Washington Post said,“It sends a signal to Beijing that the administration is going to start fighting back on economic espionage, and it sends a signal to the private sector that we’re on your team. It tells China, “nothing more will be tolerated, enough is enough.”
Sources from the administration said the decision whether to impose sanctions or not will come in two weeks time, says in the report.
US State Department Deputy Spokesperson Mark Toner during a press conference said, the United States government remains profoundly worried and concerned about Chinese Government-supported and sponsored cyber-enabled theft of confidential trade secrets, business information and proprietary technology from U.S. companies.
Toner also said, “In addition to cyber theft, we’re also concerned about actions that China’s taking that violate personal privacy, undermine core freedom.”
Asked what is keeping the US government from making a more forceful action like imposing sanctions, US spokesman said, “We’re continually surveying the peril and evaluating how to better prevent incursions and anticipate attacks on our cyber security.” I would prefer not to speak and identify with your particular inquiry other than to say that when we act, we need to verify that we have convincing proof and evidence to act on.”
Meanwhile, Chinese President Xi Jinping is scheduled for an official state visit to US this month.
