Simmering territorial tensions in the South China Sea have since shifted the focus on the Philippines’ poorly guarded maritime frontiers.
Last year, China took control of almost 90 percent of South China Sea or the West Philippines sea.
An analyst at the International Strategic Defense Initiative comes up for the Philippines immediate strategy for its protection against potential external attacks or invasion.
According to the analyst, it is better for the Philippine government to acquire a Stinger Missile system or a man-portable air-defense systems (MANPADS or MPADS) for its military. Than to wait for the more expensive shore base missile system.
A portable stinger missile system can improve its military capabilities against emerging air threats.
It is a shoulder-launched surface-to-air missiles (SAMs). A portable and lightweight, typically guided military weapons necessary for the protection of the country.
The Unit (the full device) only cost is $38,000 dollars each. A low cost and effective portable weapons system without spending a big chunk of its military budget and can be easily purchased in the United States, Israel, Germany or in France.
Example of this type of weapons is FIM-92 Stinger. It is a combat-proven, lightweight, impact-penetration, supersonic, fire-and-forget, multi-platform, air-to-air and surface-to-air missile developed to counter low level flying threats such as aircraft, helicopters, UAVs and cruise missiles.
The Stinger missiles is man-portable and shoulder-fired and has been installed on ground vehicles to provide short-range/close-in air defense capability to ground military units.
It is controlled by two operators and can operate under all weather conditions.
It offers supersonic speed and agility and can accelerates to a maximum speed of Mach 2.54 (750 m/s).
It can also be installed on a Humvee and helicopters for self-defense purposes.
The Stinger-RMP is a reprogrammable missile meaning that no hardware changes are required to change missile’s software.
The Stinger-RMP adds an improved IR-UV (Infrared and Ultraviolet) seeker, Identification Friend or Foe (IFF), improved range, improved maneuverability and best performance in IR countermeasures (IRCM) environments to the baseline Stinger missile.
The missile can also fly along the laser beam and strikes the aircraft where the missile operator or a gunner aims the laser.
Gov’t is too busy for the upcoming election
China need not to go here to win a war – all they have to do is do not allow petrol deliveries by sea – Filipinos will kill each other for food as there is no way to transport produce to the people.
we need more helmets
we better acquire more helmet and toothbrush
The stinger missile is very effective in close combat yes afganistan won over russia in afgan war but that is not the way the war will be now if china china will wage a war why wait to these chinese go near our safe zone.if these will happen we will loose, why? they have more reserve missile.even though the accuracy in not perfect but if they let loose thousand how caw can we deter it.the best way is to deter them early far way off our land.so that our people will be save from to much casualty.dont make then go any closer.to us.
yes we need more anti aircraft weaponry..we dont have enough fighter jet compare to enemy but we have anti aircraft missile that will be an equalizer.
We need about 10,000 units of this so that the Chinese will at least be threatened when they decide to bombard the country!
If the US are really intent on helping us then they can provide these Stingers for FREE, just like what they did in Afghanistan when the Russians invaded that country.
