The U.S. Air Force is planning to retire the A-10 Thunderbolt II or which is more commonly known by its nicknames “Warthog” or “Hog”. But the bottom line is that the Air Force wants to retire the entire A-10 Warthog fleet so that it can take the experienced maintenance crews from those aircraft and convert them into maintenance crews for the F-35 Lightning II.
This is the second time in the past year that the Air Force has tried to retire the A-10 (the first attempt was on budgetary grounds), but they keep getting blocked by congress. If you’re unaware of the history of the A-10 Warthog, it might be the most useful and economical aircraft in the U.S. Air Force inventory right now and it has borne the brunt of the combat missions in the War on Terror. Despite this, the U.S. Air Force has been trying to retire the Warthog almost since it was built.
Despite objections from various sectors, it is very likely that the A-10 will be retired by the US Air Force, when that happens, a group of FilAm servicemen is proposing  and requesting for the transfer of at least 12 operational A-10s plus another 12 reserve/parts source to the Philippine Air Force to show United States sincerity in helping its close ally in South East Asia.
What type of aircraft is an A-10 Warthog?
The Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II is an American twin-engine, straight wing jet aircraft developed by Fairchild-Republic in the early 1970s. It is the only United States Air Force production aircraft designed solely for close air support, including attacking tanks, armored vehicles, and other ground targets with limited air defenses.
The A-10 was designed around the 30 mm GAU-8 Avenger rotary cannon that is its primary armament. The A-10’s airframe was designed for durability, with measures such as 1,200 pounds (540 kg) of titanium aircraft armour to protect the cockpit and aircraft systems, enabling it to absorb a significant amount of damage and continue flying. The A-10A single-seat variant was the only version built, though one A-10A was converted to an A-10B twin-seat version. In 2005, a program was begun to upgrade remaining A-10A aircraft to the A-10C configuration.
The A-10’s official name comes from the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt of World War II, a fighter that was particularly effective at close air support. Its secondary mission is to provide airborne forward air control, directing other aircraft in attacks on ground targets.

We appreciate their support action at kahit second hand lang at least maka bawas sa ano man plano na mangyari at kailangan mag dagdag pa dahil maging 1:100 ang laban. . . kahit 1; 10 ay maka paatras na sa kalaban.
having this kind of combat aircraft is a good thing…..but maintaining them is the hardest part…..our govt needs lots of $$$$ to be able to maintain these aircraft in full combat readiness……and we need a lot more $$$$$ to train those pilots and aircraft mechanics and engineers that will fly and maintain these aircraft.
we need MRFs
Damn another second hand bullshit BUT still HelpFULL
What makes you think that this “Second hand bu*llsh*t” is going your way…dream on…
Cheers to that my good sir.
wow! so many comments, somehow every filipino still has patriotism for our homeland. I’m still wishing for a day that our country will be a superpower and be envied by other nations.
As clean and polite as japan, as rich and open to other nationalities as the Emirates.
Kudos and well said
BAD IDEA…USA gives Philippines 12 Hogs and in return they do business with South Korea, and Malaysia for their military upgrade. I would suggest…Philippines has to buy all these planes and beside the plane needs logistics, maintenance and equipment (which we still use to date), munitions, etc., etc., etc., and it becomes USA’s responsibility to train these pilots.
In every purchase or donated military hardware it always need preventive maintenance. You think everything last for ever? What we purchase from any country or donated military plane it would only make sense for that country to do the maintenance and training. Sino mag train sa atin bansa pag lipad ng mga warthogs if United States ibigay yan mga warthogs, Russia? Lmao …Ang Warthog is a good combat plane that has years of proven success rate in battlefield and the 30mm Gatlin gun nakakawarat ng tangke
THAT IS WHY…I SAID IT IS A BAD IDEA. Currently the hogs are stationed in Europe and Middle East. If you understand my meaning. We need all the provisions, logistics, etc. When the F35 A, B, and C are commissioned Perhaps then we can sell and not give LMAO
There is a total of 235 Warthogs still active duty in United States; not all of them are stationed in middle east or Europe. Some are still in United States, and if they do donate these 12 war planes, it will come from United States main land. Part of the Enhanced Defence Agreement (EDCA)is that United States will provide military hardware, and in return United States does not get charged for being in Philippine Military Bases because Philippines asked for help on taking care of the Chinese invading our water; think of it like a payment in a form of aid, such as catastrophic relief aid ,military support, and war machines. Since EDCA was passed by supreme court and is considered constitutional, â„¢thank GOD” , Philippines, has NOW credible protection from United States. Yes, it will cost Philippine money to maintain these planes, but it will be heavily discounted . I only hope that the next president is not Binay , Santiago or Duterte for they are all have communist ideology. Ang bansa natin ay tutumba at babagsak kung either one of these presidential candidates win…. Roxas or Poe would be a good choice for our country to move forward and take our country to a road for success.
The A10 “Warthog” is still currently in commissioned and since the manufacturer Fairchild Republic is no longer in business, parts for this plane are no longer available. Secondly, our politicians are strongly lobbying to keep the A10 due to F35 JSF(Joint Strike Fighter) is not quite ready to do CAS (Close Air Support). Third possible reason is the equipment for maintaining and loading ammunitions to A10 should be available for the air force bases within the country and abroad. I surmise that within 2 years the F35 JSF will be ready to replace most of the legacy fighters — the F/A 18, F15, F16, Harrier VTOL, — and of course the A10 Thunderbolt II. Darating din yang panahon. Yung Harrier VTOL jump jet ay ibibigay na sa Taiwan kasi pag inatake daw sila ang unang bobombahin ng mga shekwa ay yung runway daw nila which is the main HWY.
Good to know that information . I am aware the the Warthogs are manufactured along time ago and parts are hard to find. Can Philippine Airlines step in to assist in maintenance?, the reason I say this is Philippine Air Lines use to maintain alot of US military planes when US was renting from Philippines. I have a friend who use to work for PAL, It was more like a division and Philippine Airline could replicate legacy Plane parts for replacing hard to find parts, but I wish that some harriers would also be donated to Philippines, that would be an awesome combat plane for Philippines.
Absolutely, these planes have had upgrades to modern electronic technology to keep up with the ever changing counter measures of our adversary.
Kinakanibalize nalang nila ang kailangan parts sa mga watak na A10. Palagay ko yung mga junk na A10 na nasa grave yard sa arizona ay ibibigay na rin nila para sa spare part lang. Kailangan yung mga piloto natin ay papuntahin sa US at magaral ng pagamit ng A10 and the maint, crew as well. Palagay ko in 2 years, lahat ng problema ng bagong F35 JSF will all be resolved.
I’m glad you like ukay planes
Juan…you can’t even afford the “AMERICAN JUNK”.
so what happened ?? Received the birds?
